Years ago I ran a podcast with my friends about videogames. It was a great excuse to get together regularly and shoot the shit and also creatively fulfilling in terms of learning how to record, edit, and publish audio online. It has been a long time since then and I missed the conversations and the satisfaction of putting something out consistently for others to enjoy. Video editing takes time I no longer have, and I while I enjoy writing I miss the informal and casual nature of just talking to someone. And so I proposed to fellow Superculture Discord member and film newsletter writer Ben Verschoor starting up a podcast talking about movies. I have been terrible at keeping up on contemporary releases and Ben wanted to expand their viewings of older films and so we decided on a format of both of us watching a contemporary release to discuss each episode and separately picking a related film as a double feature of sorts. This relation to the film we both viewed can be as obscure as possible or explicitly obvious. And so became Mise en Screen.
Our episode 0 test went up last week in which we talk about the format as well as pull up each other’s Letterboxd for a Q&A session. Now our first “real” episode is out on Ari Aster’s Eddington (2025). We both found there was a lot to talk about and break our discussion into a non spoiler and a spoiler portion splitting the episode fairly even down between both hours. Our aim was for episodes to be 40-60 minutes but this one just had so much to dig into and we both enjoyed trying to reason through all the film had to say.
